White Sand and Turquoise Waters

Bold colors and a contemplative sailor

I knew it would happen one day, but still, I was woefully unprepared.

As a U.S. Marine, my hubby Joe is one of the countless American heroes who serves our country to protect our freedom.  I remember my fear when he joined that one day he’d be called to duty overseas, but after a couple of years I thought maybe he was one of the lucky ones who wouldn’t be deployed.  Too bad I was wrong.  Last month we were told Joe had just a couple weeks before he’d be sent to the war front.  Between packing, getting our accounts in order and buying all the gear he’d need for the trip, we made a point to spend as much quality time together as possible.  It didn’t take long to decide a beach vacation was in order!

We considered Destin, Florida, but chose instead to drive the extra half hour to Seaside, a quaint beach town along scenic route 30-A.  It was definitely the right decision.  The sandy, white beaches welcomed us into beautiful turquoise waters.  Taco shacks and bustling bars provided the perfect spots to sit down with a cold beer.  And the brightly painted hotel and houses drew our attention far away from the war front in the Middle East.  I think I just might paint one of my rooms those beautiful colors; a cheerful reminder of a very difficult goodbye.
